Hans Rosling’s animated bubble chart, first presented in his legendary 2006 TED talk, showed 200 years of global development in four minutes. Each country is a bubble: x-axis is income, y-axis is life expectancy, bubble size is population, and color is continent. Press play and watch the world transform.

The visualization itself — a motion chart — wasn’t new (it descended from Trendalyzer software by Rosling’s son). What was revolutionary was how Rosling used it as a presentation instrument, narrating the animation live with infectious enthusiasm, turning dry development statistics into dramatic storytelling.

Gapminder’s tool made the connected scatterplot and animated bubble chart mainstream. More importantly, it proved that the right visualization combined with the right presenter could change how millions of people understand the world.
