Data Sketches

Data Sketches는 가장 뛰어난 독립 데이터 시각화 실무자로 꼽히는 나디아 브레머(Nadieh Bremer)와 셜리 우(Shirley Wu)가 1년간 진행한 협업 프로젝트입니다. 두 사람은 매달 하나의 주제를 정해 각자 독립적으로 시각화를 제작한 뒤, 데이터 수집, 디자인 결정, 코드 상의 어려움, 그리고 배운 점까지 그 과정을 글로 정리했습니다.

Data Sketches was a year-long collaboration between Nadieh Bremer and Shirley Wu, two of the most accomplished independent data visualization practitioners. Each month they chose a topic, independently created a visualization, then wrote up their process — data collection, design decisions, code challenges, and lessons learned.

Data Sketches가 획기적이었던 이유는 과정에 대한 급진적인 투명성 때문입니다. 대부분의 데이터 시각화는 완성된 결과물로만 제시되지만, Data Sketches는 실패한 접근법, 방향 전환, 기술적 우회 등 창작 작업의 지저분한 실제 모습을 보여주었습니다. 이 점이 이 프로젝트를 교육 자료로서 대체 불가능한 것으로 만들었습니다.

What made Data Sketches groundbreaking was its radical transparency about process. Most dataviz is presented as finished product; Data Sketches showed the messy reality of creative work — failed approaches, changed directions, technical workarounds. This made it invaluable as an educational resource.

이 프로젝트는 2021년 CRC Press에서 책으로 출간되었습니다. 이는 데이터 시각화가 단순한 기술이 아니라 예술이나 디자인과 유사한 과정을 거치는 창작 활동임을 보여주었습니다. 브레머와 우 두 사람 모두 이후 데이터 시각화 커뮤니티를 대표하는 목소리로 성장했습니다.

The project was published as a book by CRC Press in 2021. It demonstrated that data visualization is a creative practice with a process analogous to art and design, not just a technical skill. Both Bremer and Wu went on to become leading voices in the data visualization community.
